(Room Of One's Own.) At least we now have more choice in the matter. Another interesting article in January 25, International Newsweek on Queen Victoria, the first working mom, (NINE kids) and not so darn thrilled about it either. Then again, Newsweek January 19, page 30. Meeting at the White House: about 20 people, only 3 women, and only 1 black man - but he's at the head of the table! It IS tougher to make it, either as a minority, a woman, or someone with kids - but at least we have more choices open to us than even 20 or 30 years ago, let alone 100.Twintensityhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10913449903223318760noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8572501698854836939.post-72498904307388566602010-01-30T16:24:07.554+01:002010-01-30T16:24:07.554+01:00Like I said, they're in Turkey.Like I said, they're in Turkey.David V.http://www.eltworld.net/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8572501698854836939.post-72677967241626923672010-01-30T16:22:29.985+01:002010-01-30T16:22:29.985+01:00Thanks for a wide-ranging and thought provoking po...Thanks for a wide-ranging and thought provoking post, as always, Melanie. The topic of female plenary speakers has been explored on a number of blogs recently (Gavin Dudeney's, Jeremy Hamer's and this blog all spring to mind), but I think it is worth mentioning again here. Although some conference organisers now try to ensure a gender balance in invited speakers (IATEFL has noticeably been doing this for years), of the several conferences that I will be attending between next weekend and April, I yet again count a vast majority of male plenary speakers. And that's before we even consider race and so-called non-native speakers. I constantly find myself asking when looking at plenary speakers for a conference, 'Where are the women?' In 2010. Sigh.
NickyNickyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01152299109840463943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8572501698854836939.post-50744775224650495112010-01-30T16:21:18.437+01:002010-01-30T16:21:18.437+01:00Come to Turkey where the exact opposite seems to b...Come to Turkey where the exact opposite seems to be true.David V.http://www.eltworld.net/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8572501698854836939.post-11312021643644209242010-01-30T12:36:08.688+01:002010-01-30T12:36:08.688+01:00Hmm... Graham, that is true but very new - when I first got to the blogosphere and there were maybe 20 ELT bloggers... other than Christina Costa and a handful of others like Susana Canelo and,I can't remember her name she used to write ESL notebook(?), the blogosphere was dominated by men. This has changed radically in the last 18 months tho', you're right.

And TmmflaSA, ta - though I found it interesting that your staff room test was just based on women, I think Melanie was also challenging us on the race card too!

Yup, Alex, I am unbelievably honored to put this piece up on my blog, must say!

KarenneKALINAGO ENGLISHhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15202016406865561740noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8572501698854836939.post-76177416971963896712010-01-29T16:48:35.789+01:002010-01-29T16:48:35.789+01:00I enjoyed reading the article and I appreciate the...I enjoyed reading the article and I appreciate the perspective that you give. I think iot's inaccurate re. Learning Technologies though (what you refer to as IT) - the most dynamic and exciting new ideas in the use of LT in ELT seem to be coming from women at the moment, and they seem to be doing very well too.

Just look at the ELT blogosphere and on Twitter, or take a look at who's presenting at the IATEFL conference (the IATEFL LT SIG day is dominated by women, and I haven't counted, but I think most ICT related talks there are by women too)Graham Stanleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04622452712084518220noreply@blogger.com
